Immediate Action: Opening the Doors Wider
Deputy Government Spokesperson Ms. Airin Phanrit confirmed that several short-term measures are already in effect. These initiatives are designed to reduce barriers for international travelers and adapt to modern work-travel lifestyles:

Expanded Visa Exemptions: Tourists from 93 countries and territories can now enter Thailand visa-free for stays of up to 60 days.
Visa on Arrival (VoA): Eligibility for Visa on Arrival has been expanded to 31 countries and territories in the initial phase.
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): A new visa specifically targeting remote workers and digital nomads has been launched.
Non-Immigrant ED Plus: This new category supports international students, allowing them to combine education with work opportunities.
To ensure these changes are implemented smoothly, the government has established a national visa policy committee to unify immigration direction across all agencies.

Medium & Long-Term Strategy: Efficiency and Retirement
Looking ahead, the government is focusing on structural changes to improve administrative efficiency and attract long-term residents, particularly retirees.

Simplified Visa Categories: The complex system of 17 Non-Immigrant visa types has been consolidated into just 7 categories.
E-Visa Upgrades: The electronic visa system is undergoing significant upgrades to seamlessly integrate services across Thai embassies and consulates globally.
Targeting Retirees: Authorities are reviewing long-stay visa criteria specifically for retirees. The goal is to attract foreign nationals with stable post-retirement income to reside in Thailand, thereby injecting consistent spending into the local economy.
VoA Expansion (Phase 2): Preparations are underway to further expand the list of countries eligible for Visa on Arrival.

Economic Impact
These measures represent a proactive pivot in Thailand’s economic strategy. By modernizing the visa system, the government aims not only to recover from previous economic slumps but to build a more resilient tourism sector. The focus on high-quality visitors—ranging from skilled remote workers to financially stable retirees—signals a shift toward value-driven tourism that supports long-term economic recovery.
